Journaling is a great activity for
anyone. You can find yourself a beautiful journal book with handmade paper or
carry around a fifty cent spiral ring notebook. Just find something that’s available
to write down what you’re thinking, how you’re feeling, what people are talking
to you about.
Adoption is a perfect reason to
clean out all the nooks and crannies, sort out the junk, have a tag sale and
get organized. If you are comfortable doing so, begin to prepare your new
child’s room.
This is a wonderful time to take
advantage of the support that is always available through adoption support
groups. It can be great fun to go to social gatherings where you can get a
“baby fix” or “child fix” by watching other newly formed families and listening
to their stories.
There are also many adoption
support groups that function online. Check out www.adoption.org for a good list of
possibilities.
If you are adopting with a partner,
now is a good time to plan some special activities together.
As you well know,
it will be harder to find special time once your family grows so take advantage
of the waiting period to go on a getaway weekend or have a weekly “dinner and a
movie” date.
You will need to have extra reserves of physical and
emotional energy when your child arrives. Be sure that you are getting enough
sleep, eating well and exercising. This is a good time to establish an exercise
routine that you will be able to continue once your child arrives.
